Building rustic luxury in Canada

The style is most convincing when the materials are genuinely what they appear to be. Reclaimed timber with real history, full-depth stone, hand-troweled plaster and honest metalwork carry a weight that manufactured equivalents do not, and the difference is obvious in person even when it is invisible in a photograph.

It suits acreage and recreational sites where the landscape is doing much of the work and a refined design would feel out of place. It is a poor fit on a tight urban lot, where the material weight has nothing to answer to.

The main risk is theming. A rustic house that reads as a set rather than a building is the failure mode, and it usually comes from too many gestures rather than too few.
