Building mountain modern in Canada

The style exists to solve a specific problem: how to build a contemporary house in a landscape whose scale and materials would overwhelm a purely minimal design. The answer is generally heavy timber and stone at the base and the entry, and glass where the view is.

It is an expensive style to build honestly. Real heavy timber, real stone and structurally glazed openings are all costly, and the details where they meet are the ones that punish a weak envelope. It is also a style with a great deal of imitation in the market — thin stone veneer and dimensional lumber dressed as timber — which is worth asking about directly.

On a genuine mountain site, the glazing that makes the style work is also the biggest thermal liability. High-performance units and careful solar and thermal-bridge design are not optional.
