Prairie is the one genuinely North American architectural style, and it was designed for precisely the landscape and climate that Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba present. The deep overhangs shade the summer sun and protect the walls; the horizontal emphasis settles the house into a flat horizon rather than fighting it.

It is comparatively rare in contemporary Canadian custom building, which is part of its appeal — a well-executed prairie house does not look like anything else on the street.

The defining details are the ones most often compromised. The overhangs need to be genuinely deep to read correctly, and the window banding needs to be continuous rather than a row of separate punched openings. Both cost money, and a value-engineered prairie house stops being one.
